I Am Always Poem by Paul Warren

I Am Always

I was a King's man riding upright
Who chased the Highwaymen on sight
On the coach roads of Old England around
When Bail up was shouted down
But they say I was cut down
Not uttering a sound

I was Peeler who strode the streets
Of a darken Whitechapel so dark and terror complete
When the Ripper ruled the night
And toughness was our fight
But they say that my throat was slashed
Lying my life in a pool of blood passed

I was a Mounted Constable riding the outback
When Ned Kelly roamed the bush tracks
And we escorted gold from Ballarat
As Tolmer's escorts from Adelaide and back
But they say I was gunned down
By bushrangers in their revenge bound

I was a Motor Traffic Constable with the wind in my face
As I rode the Queen's highway place
The road was ours to command
Escorting royalty was a demand
But they say I was killed
When a truck driver didn't yield

I was a detective pitting my skill
Against criminals and their unlawful will
Some thought they could out wit me in the brief
And they lost it in their belief
But they say a bomb killed me loud
Through the post an explosion made my shroud

You may think that I have died
But this thought I cannot abide
For return I assure you I will
I am always is my thrill
To uphold the law for all time
Look closely at my eyes for me to shine.
