I Could Breathe Poem by Rachel Brewer

I Could Breathe

It cut through me like scissors through paper,
I watched as my blood dripped down,
Down every inch of me, through every vein.

I watched the blood, just watched,
Didn’t try too resist the force,
Didn’t even move.

It was like the fear of death took over me,
Paralysed me.
Stopped me from working properly.

I knew I could beat it if I tried,
But couldn’t break the trance,
The trance of death that held me firmly.

I could feel the devil holding me,
Holding me in place as I cried,
I cried for the pain to stop.

I wanted someone to take me away,
Away from the pain, from the devil,
And then you did.

You saved me,
You held me,
You protected me.

You took me away from the darkness,
And I could breath.
Because of you.
