I Don'T Know How I Know But I Just Do Poem by Euginia Tan

I Don'T Know How I Know But I Just Do

As night falls I wait for the clock to tick.
I know, at the tock, that you will come home.
I don't know how I know but I just do.

When the door opens I wait for a creak,
I do not see you as you come in but at the turn of the lock,
I know it is you.
You do not need to knock.

As I am laying down to sleep,
Before my eyes shut I feel my lashes flutter.
There is still a light next to me but it is getting dimmer.
I do not see you as you say good night but
I still meet you in my dreams.

And in the morning I know I will feel a warm kiss. On the cheek,
A whisper in my ear before you open the window and let the sunrays in.

If I am bent over reading a book,
I know, at the turn of the page, you are throwing me a look.
I continue to skim classical lines and lyrical verses but I know
This would have made a beautiful portrait.

Anything I do, I hardly make a sound.
I don't say much, I don't tell a soul but
I know, that as I draw a breath in you will come.
That whatever I do your shadow is on the wall behind me.
Watching. Knowing.

As I walk amidst the trees I wait for a leaf to fall.
I know, I cannot catch it.
Because my hand will be in yours.
At the next moment.
When a flower blooms,
When our son lets out his first cry,
You would have been there with me.

I do not need to wait. I do not expect.
I know at the first tremor, at the faintest whimper,
At the lowest treble and the highest pitch,
You will be by my side. It is a promise. Not a wish.

I don't know how I know but I just do.
