If Only. Poem by Glenn Ford

If Only.

If only we picked pens and not guns when affronted
If only we used words and not fist when confronted
If only we spoke and not yelled when frustrated
If only we stayed clam and not enraged when berated.

If only we showed compassion and not indifference to the weak
If only we were not exploitative and impassive of the meek
If only we could respect and not mock those who are disabled
If only we would feed and not ignore those who are emaciated

If only we were sharp and clear and never vague
If only we could keep a promise and then not renege
If only we confronted injustice and didn't hide
If only we spoke the truth and never lied.

If only we could
If only we would
If only we!
If only.
