In April Far Away Poem by Francis Duggan

In April Far Away

The bluebells by the hedgerow are blooming rich and blue
And in the pine grove by the cottage the shy wood pigeon coo
And the swallows o'er the old fields are twittering as they fly
And skylark he is carolling in the cloudy morning sky.

And the rank grass stretched by the river tell where the floods have been
And Spring has come and with her brought her wild flowers and her green
And chaffinch in her mossy nest her eggs warm neath her breast
And jackdaws are stick gathering as they build their chimney nest.

By briery headland of old field where the rank rushes grow
The shy cock pheasant clap his wings and stretch his neck and crow
And in the high field by the hill by the hill sheep grazed bare
Out nibbling in the morning sun the shy brown mountain hare.

In grassy field by the farmyard the cow to her calf low
And on rock amidst the stream rapids the bird with breast white as snow
The dipper pipes his scratchy notes proclaiming territory
The wild birds have their borders though their borders we can't see.

It is that time of year again when wild birds nest and sing
And deciduous trees don new green cloaks in the mild days of Spring
And robin on the cypress tree carols at dawn of day
And wildflowers bloom in the grassy fields in April far away.
