In Memory Of The Mahatma Poem by FABIYAS M V

In Memory Of The Mahatma

Millions came like moths
from the cities and slums, and
the countryside and hillsides,
enchanted by his bright light.

He led an army without arms
in the war against an empire,
where the sun never set.
His ‘non-violence' was more
powerful than an artillery.

He taught the hungry how to
spin the threads of hope with
the spinning-wheels. Our
papas and grandpas learned
from him how to sacrifice,
slaying the selfishness.

He polished the dusty pride
and self-respect in Indian minds.

Diverse shades of simplicity were
visible on hishalf-naked figure.

His vibrant words caused tremor
in a distant continent too.

People adorned their affection
towards him with the adjectives
like ‘Mahatma' and ‘Bapu'.

Godse pierced the chest of a
nation's dream - bullets left
behind the heinous ingratitude.

Gandhi journeys through
the generations. Standing on
the pedestals, and hanging
on the nails, he proclaims
the eternaltruths.
