Is This All That We Have? Poem by Zvikomborero Chirema

Is This All That We Have?

Is this all that we have here?
You teach your little boy to walk
You teach him to walk away from you
Is this all that we have here?
How can you know how to love
Without knowing how to let go?

Is this all that we have here?
You're proud your little girl can run
She prepares to run away from you
Is this all that we have here?
We sow seeds of happiness
We reap nothing but misery.

That is when I cried when I thought
Man could be nothing but a flower
He flourishes a moment before fading away
We've tried to paint the petals, can we stay young forever?
A flower has to die before it can rise again

That is when I cried when I thought
Man could be worse than the sun
He rises in the morning before hiding again
But the sun has another life, it rises the next morning
If man is not the same
We are beings full of misery.
