It Was Beyond Blood Curdling Poem by Raymond Farrell

It Was Beyond Blood Curdling

Rating: 5.0

It was beyond blood-curdling
If it can be gauged
By my reaction
When a high-pitched
Barrage of sounds
Split the late October night
Just as I passed
Under an oak tree
While making my way
Across the back pasture
In the dead of night
At first
I wondered
If a bobcat
Was about to drop
Down on me
First I froze
Then I ran
I stopped
Collected my thoughts
Then went back
And shone the flashlight
On the lowest bough
There
Nose to nose
Were two porcupines
Having a disagreement
About who should leave
Or who should stay put
It was a great relief
To discover
Deadly monsters
Did not inhabit
These
My beloved woods.

Porcupines on boughs. A wonderful poem.++10 Reminds me of an occasion when I thought a burglar got in. Cat through the window. Such relief.

Enjoyed the poem. It reminds me of when I was a child and I would walk in the dark from my Grandmas house back down to the cottage. I always had the flashlight aimed into the woods looking for those shining eyes that I knew must be watching me. A fifteen minute walk. The last five minutes l always ran as fast as I could. Thanks for the memories.
