January Evening Poem by Francis Duggan

January Evening

Rating: 5.0

White butterflies in the warm air of a January day
In the evening sunshine seemingly play
The weather quite warm close to thirty degrees
And the blue sky full of the buzzing of bush flies and bees
The flute like warbling tunes ever pleasant to hear
Of the birds who do sing every day of the year
The silver billed magpies singing on the sunlit trees
Their pleasant notes carrying in the gentle breeze
The brown grass in the paddocks looks lifeless and dry
Yet no sign of rain in the blue evening sky
The farmdams low in water and bone dry every drain
And the farmers of late have been hoping for rain
But when it will rain only Nature will decide
Another warm and dry evening in the brown countryside.
