Koopa Poem by Nassy Fesharaki

Koopa

Koopa

Saw the sign:
"Meat, Halal."

Curious, went inside.

Saw items like pickles
-processed in Iran.

Did shopping and purchased…

One item, "Chaghaleh: "
-a reminder of the past
-when still chubby and...

We plucked the almonds
- (baby-green, very young,)
-rubbed off the woolly part
-of the skin; make it soft.

Then ate it with some salt.

In times, we
-grounded and mixed it
-with yogurt "Yam, yum…"
-and had it with much fun.

Looked at the bag when at home
-saw writing said: "Koopa."
- (A village near ours!)

"He can be a cousin; "
- (from my maternal grandma's.)

Once, when young
-I escaped to Tehran
-on return took a long walk
-all the way from there
-all the way to Fesharak…

I have been a devil!
I sure am a devil!
