Leaflets From My Life - The Bird And The Whistle Poem by Geeta Radhakrishna Menon

Leaflets From My Life - The Bird And The Whistle

Rating: 5.0

I have two material objects
That reminds me of my childhood.
A beautifully carved metallic bird, made in India,
And an attractive metallic whistle, made in England.
Both are gifts -
The bird from my mother
And the whistle from my father.
I have treasured and retained them for years now.

The bird constantly reminded me
Of the stories told by my loving mother,
Of a red bird that spoke only the truth.
On the other hand, the whistle was a symbol
Of courage, like my father, who served the Indian Army.
I was taught and encouraged to blow the whistle,
When something is dark and gloomy,
When something is grey and murky.

As a child, very often, I blew the whistle,
Within my family circle, against everyone in the family.
Sometimes, even against my Dad
For drinking an extra peg of brandy.
My siblings disliked me for exposing their pranks
By blowing the whistle so loud. Undeterred,
I continued to whistle whenever there was something wrong.

After many, many years, today at 5 p.m.,
I once again, blew the same whistle, loud and clear,
To stand in unity with the whole of India,
To stand with the people of this world,
As one large human family,
To fight against the dreadful disease -Covid 19,
To eradicate the dangerous Corona Virus
That has threatened and frightened the people world over.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Today, the Indian Government, imposed a Janata Curfew in India, as a solidarity to fight against Covid 19; and to thank & salute all professionals like doctors who are working selflessly to serve the people. At 5 pm, the people of India, appeared in their balconies to clap, to ring bells and clang on the plates and blow the conch. The response was tremendous and mind blowing. I was so touched, overwhelmed and emotional to see the people stand together throwing all differences. I picked up my father's old whistle and blew to my heart's content. Then, sat down to pen this poem.

No more charming nor poetical whistle blower Have we here, God bless those that care for others Which the world should deeply cheer. Thank you for this wonderful, inspiring poem! How much good can be gotten from its pleasant lecture. When one sees wrong, not denouncing when you can, makes you an accessory to the harm and to the crime committed.

An excellent act of solidarity has intellegently been connected to the emotional binding of the family. Telling stories through a bird is a literature traditition of Kerala. It is worth remember Ezhuthachhan and his Kilipattu of Adhyatma Ramayanam and the like. Top marks
