Lecture Me Poem by Suzanne Hayasaki

Lecture Me

Lecture me.
Tell me that something isn’t
What it so obviously must be
And wait for me to agree.
Oops!
That may take an eternity!

Browbeat me.
Be stubborn.
Be blunt.
Be belligerent
Expect me to give in.
You might as well move in
And wait to see which of us death takes first.

Criticize me.
Draw attention to my flaws.
Compare me unfairly
With those you believe I compete with.
Ready yourself to seize my ego.
And see how that goes.

In the meantime, I will thrive
On what my own eyes
And what my own soul
Tells me is truly beautiful.

That, I will pursue.
The rest, I leave to you
To sift through
For answers to the questions
You refused to ask.
