Legacy
by Ted L Glines
As days grow few and life is almost done,
possessions - worldly wealth is very small,
no gold nor jewels sequestered in my hall,
inheritance - an empty thing - no fun,
for when I look for family - I have none,
no need for wills - no lawyers come to call,
and - at my wake - please have yourself a ball,
for hoards bequeathed from death means no one won.
Instead, I see a need in you today,
a need I can fulfill - to do you good
and this is all it takes to make me laugh,
my caring freely given - understood,
for you are most important come what may,
the goodness of my life - my epitaph.
As money rules your heart - it kills your fate
for riches can't unlock the Pearly Gate,
feed the hungry - clothe the poor
see each new need - God's open door,
for maggots only love the fine estate.
