Letter To My Unborn Son Poem by Adisa Oludare Enitan

Letter To My Unborn Son

Dear son,
you have come of age
and things might look strange
so i am writing you this piece
from the bottom of my heart
so you can know life and its art
I won't sugarcoat any word
so you can live this world
without fear and sagesse
to get through hard times

Listen son,
I have failed you
like my father failed me
but you don't have to take it against me
like i did to him
do not ignore your culture
for it will return to torture
hold on to your history
and it will guide you from misery

My son,
love your neighbours
and acknowledge your differences
for it will increase your chances
of survival
without using revolver
seek not any unrealistic eldorado
for your land is full of milk and honey
hope not for any aid from abroad
it will be parasitic in nature

Hear this son,
trust your brothers
go to war with them
do not engage in any secret cult
it will enslave you unconsciously
be responsible for all your actions
and the consequences of your inactions
don't be hard on yourself
move step by step
embrace your mistakes
no matter what it take
do not work with anger
it will lead you to hunger
take your time in making decisions
do not jump into conclusions
never be scared of commitment
and reason without sentiment
