Love At The 99 Cent Store Poem by Chuy Amante

Love At The 99 Cent Store

Rating: 5.0

I knew today would be another amazing day,
when I entered the parking lot display,

old cracked asphalt teeming with green weeds,
an exotic garden fulfilling Ma Nature's needs!

Hold on folks, it gets much better!
Come on inside, take off your sweater.

While in line, I was sure I smelled wine!
I imagined vineyards, France, Italy, Divine!

Carried away in my fanciful dream,
I noticed, the aroma was drifting,
pleasantly from a little old Queen!

My heart grew warm, and bigger, I wanted to thank her,
feeling awkward, I decided to smile
and just enjoy her liquor!

Right ahead of me was yet another sight to behold,
a one-legged man, in a wheel chair, quite old.

Smiling I talked to him
I asked how his day was going,
He looked up from his sad state,
and really started glowing!

He talked of the Sunshine, the rain and the grandson,
How fortunate his life was spared, but not always so fun.

I loved the love he had for his poor life,
I loved the love he had for son, grandson and wife!

Approaching the register, I looked up and saw,
A towering beauty,6 foot 2 inches, tattooed and raw!

I told her how colorful were her tatts and hair,
She looked amazed at me, like nobody else had cared!

I admired and stated that 'Tall' was the best,
she had nothing to be ashamed of, forget the rest!

She giggled, I flirted, she got quite a kick,
out of a guy, much older, with pretty good schtick!

I left the store with a heart so on fire,
what could come next? More love I desired!

On the curb was a gentleman, dressed in white,
I looked at him directly, not intending fright.

He humbly asked if I could donate for the poor,
I said, 'certainly brother' and started to pour.

I surprised him and said, Que Dios Te Bediga,
In kind he returned, 'Adios mi amigo, Arriba, Arriba! '

In tears of joy my heart was a bursting open,
out of my chest and into the open,
lots more love I was selfishly hopin!

Walking to my car aways off was a holler,
Diez tamales amigo, only ten dollar!

Things had gone from great to greater lovin'
homemade tamales, fresh, from Abuela's oven!

Gimme dos docenas, por favor amigo,
gimme the queso with masa de trigo!
All smiles and kindness, no reason for ego!

Each day is filled with countless chances,
but you gotta TALK, and not avoid glances!

I love all of this place, the weeds and the pain,
It all gives me the chance to see Sunshine thru rain!

The sick I see whole, the sad I see smiling,
the hurt I see mended, The Truth, no beguiling!

See the perfect in all and all will be so,
There is a reason for balance, truth be told.

A lesson in struggle, pain and duress,
Stand tall, and smile, your own hurts suppress!

Giving and helping,
share a positive word,
Turn this place into LOVE,
YOUR SONG WILL BE HEARD!

I have no words to describe the immensity of this work., I don't know even what to call it for it goes far beyond the normal poetic form. The descriptions and feelings are instantly absorbed So well is it written So well it informs The humor is witty And not uniform You go from straight laughter, to sentiment, torn The old man and family, for example. The Spanish-Mexican vignettes, perfect in all, both languages fit in, never a call. I never have read a work such as this, but I'll read it 99 cents times over, To renew my Bliss. Excuse me, Mr Tripp but you CAN have a.99 cent store, like you had Woolworth's 5 and 10 store..(The cents was left out, because it was understood in the context) So there!
