Mother Poem by Donna McCord

Mother

At the time of conception a woman will change
She still walks and talks and looks the same
But what changes is not what you see at a glance
It’s the God given power to give life a chance.

To assist God in a miracle is truly unique.
He chose the female because she’s not weak.
Most men can’t handle what mothers can
But that’s the difference in a woman and man.

During gestation the female gains strength
The road she must travel is not measured in length
It’s expected that she must put the child first
But that doesn’t change the day she gives birth.

Delivery will take every ounce of her strength
God gave her the will to use her instinct.
The labor is agony from the depths of her soul
Not something a man knows, just what he’s been told.

As soon as the child has breathed life on its own
The pain that was felt by the mother is gone.
Just to look at the miracle that she was blessed to assist
Makes her know that there’s no greater gift than this.

From the moment of birth, she knows it’s a loan
This small gift from God from the seeds she has sown
She seeks help from God to mold them in spirit
To respect the world and all who dwell within it.

Then there comes the time to set the child free
And she’ll suffer a new kind of agony
She knows her job’s done, but she won’t turn away
For she knows she’ll be needed again someday.

And when her time comes and the Lord calls her home
She will be remembered for all the good things she’s done.
All those nights she lost sleep she’ll recover
And her children will mourn for the loss of their mother.
