Moving On Poem by Aria Quimby

Moving On

I sit at home talking to you on the phone
Tears rolling down my cheek
You’re so happy
Despite the fact
That you have had to fight with this cancer for so long
But you aren’t getting any better
Any day now could be your last

I video chat with you
As I look at the screen I see you in your hospital bed
You have nothing but a smile on your face
You tell me how much it means to you to see me
All I can do is smile back

Not long after I hear the disheartening news
You have passed on
I taste the saltiness of my tears within my mouth
And I think of the man I never knew
The man I never got the chance to call “Grandpa”
