Mr. Medicine Man Poem by Shelby Barker

Mr. Medicine Man

Mr. Medicine Man,
journeyed far have I;
past silent ridges, harsh precipices,
all under cloudy sky
My thoughts ring in my ears
through lack of being observed
In this empty canyon
I’m neither seen nor heard
I’ve been soaked by rain of judgment
without an umbrella to endure
For I do not know my sickness,
I know of no true cure
So here today, I’ve climbed to your feet
Bruised and without a voice
to ask that you would hear me
in the silence of this noise
Mr. Medicine Man,
can you dull these internal spears?
Can you consider my symptoms
with open eyes and ears?
In this failing world
it seems I’m all alone;
I move about unnoticed
with lonely aching bones
Mix me an elixir
and enlist yourself my friend
listen to me and promise
better weather at world’s end.
