I must remind you evening fast is fleeting
And like the shadows you shall soon depart.
Translate then into words your pulse beating,
I shall hold silence while you speak your part.
Whisper your whispers, tarrying awhile-
See how my heart would multiply its joy
By feigning by the quiet of your smile
Hence at the words those have escaped your voice.
I know, I know that silences unstirred
Offer more music than the mellowed note
And that the loveliest of lyrics heard
Is lovelier still while hushed in the throat,
But, ah, tonight it is not fancied art
But flowered speech that can appease my heart.
