My Alcohol-Abusing Dad Said 'I Love You.' - Poem by Larry Hussey

After thinking about it,
my dad said 'I love you.'
In my mind, the words formed
red and white wine-colored icicles
down his chin.
The voicemail was made at around one a.m.
so it must have been a new year's resolution
that he wanted to check off right away
so he could show everybody.

Poet's Notes about The Poem

There is an unofficial term of 'functioning alcoholic.' It means you can blame everybody else for your problems.
