My Eye Must Take Second Place, A Heart Song Poem by Glen Kappy

My Eye Must Take Second Place, A Heart Song

Rating: 5.0

My eye must take second place.
It must take second place and be confounded.

For thick and suffocating darkness
is nothing to fear.

And the sight of vast uninhabited space
does not negate the God who is there.

And though the future seem barren of promise
still that stone must yield.

Sickness, hunger, thirst—
an eyeful and mindful of affliction—
cannot prevent the glory that lies beyond the veil.

My eye will and will always—
but you have promised you will never never
forsake me nor—fail.

hi, bharati! thanks for reading this poem and commenting. first, i'm glad you have it, faith, and that we can share what it means for us. it strikes me that faith itself is a gift. i lived my first twenty-five years without it, and now it's hard to imagine not having it. and it's good to understand, as the biblical psalmists did, that to know God is doesn't mean we can't question or even be mad at God. faith is essentially a trust relationship, and relationships can be rocky at times. be very blessed, bharati! -glen

Fascinating concept to contemplate, that darkness may cause fear because within it there is nothing to stimulate the eye, but that has otherwise absolutely nothing to do with the qualities of that space-time intersection. Your work strongly renders this thought, that reliance upon our material senses alone deprives us of a much greater reality. Access to those much vaster spiritual dimensions requires an unclenching of our fists upon the material dimensions that are so much easier to grasp; but if we desire to climb higher, we must let go of the safety net. Vividly and powerfully rendered, Glen. Bravo.

wow! thank you, neal, for your articulate and kind commentary. ah! yes! unclenching and letting go. it's a ongoing challenge for me as i explore it in my poem to fly. related to this, years ago someone pointed out to me that the way up is down, following the pattern of jesus, as paul encourages in philippians 2: 5-11. (some believe this may have been an early confession paul incorporated in his letter. a rendering of this passage i like is in eugene peterson's the message; if you don't know it, you access it through the website bible gateway. be much blessed! glen

My eye will and will always— but you have promised you will never never forsake me nor—fail. God never forsakes anyone - for all are his children. It is we the humans that refuses to take challenges, is distressed and disappointed, and in the process forsakes God. A true devotee of God remains forever faithful and steadfast. A nice poem, Glen. I enjoyed reading it.
