That by nature depraved, I am akin
My path to life with Him abhorred
I had no longing or desire for Him
I knew neither Him nor His name
My Sundays with friends to gather
A day of pleasure and indulgence
Assuagement of music and hymns
My perfunctory exercise of praise
One unusual day He reached for me
And Christ sought me and found me
There in my coy and offhand attitude
Heart, ears and eyes he quickened
His words in me infused, to make me
By His grace what I am not by nature
That He adopted me into His family
His Spirit unstinting, daily abounding
Works in me to produce what I cannot
Now, I know Him; I know His name
I am His child, and He is my Lord
