Horrible was the Kalinga war,
Ordered by Ashoka, the Emperor.
There was heavy bloodshed,
Victory, His army chief reported.
A Buddhist monk was passing by,
He took the king by surprise.
Not a victory, but a defeat,
Took the Emperor to the war field.
Beheaded soldiers, doomed heirs
and assigns;
Dashing of heads of weeping kith and kins.
Helpless fighters waiting for death,
Untold miseries, the emperor witnessed.
Loss of properties, lives of people,
Melted his stony heart, created ripples.
All this happened due to your imprudence,
Without fear, explained the reverend.
What type of victory you achieved?
Destroyed dreams and peace of human beings.
If you want to be a real conqueror,
Win their hearts by love, be a victor.
His heart drastically changed,
Chandashoka(warrior Ashoka) to
Dharmashoka(regious Ashoka) turned.
Continued in part--2.
A tragedy could open an avenue towards peace. A beautiful and poignant story with a moral.lesson.
