Nearly Midnight Poem by Barry Middleton

Nearly Midnight

Rating: 5.0

Nearly midnight, and the thunder calls,
and echoes from the sky on sturdy walls.

Soon sleep will come, and with it gentle rain,
the end of day and all of daytime pain.

The town is quiet; the town folk are at rest.
The work is done; and I have done my best.

My eyes are heavy with a welcome dream.
Above the rain and clouds, the stars yet gleam.

It comforts me to know as midnight nears,
that darkness will abate my doubts and tears.

The last verse of this poem is paradoxical. The darkness will abate my doubts and tears.... Darkness as a positive force represents for the poet a peaceful state of unconsciousness when the burden of life no longer weighs on the poet's mind. A great piece. Enjoyed reading.10

I usually have good dreams. Darkness brings rest and peace. Thanks for the review.
