Nice To Be Here Poem by Bill Wright

Nice To Be Here

I bounce around the meadow,
Not a single care in the world,
I hop along from tree to tree,
As I cover lots of ground.

There are dozens in our family,
Mum's expecting more again,
But there's all this lovely grass to eat,
So life for all is fine.

The meadow is a lovely place,
Trees stand all around,
With lots of bark for us,
To nibble all the time.

We live in many burrows,
Some deep underground,
The family have lived here for years,
All feeling safe and sound.

It really is a glorious day,
No rain is going to fall,
The sun is shining brightly,
Beaming down on one and all.

What's this I see, a single cloud,
Blotting out the sun,
Squealing loudly now in pain,
Mum! Mum! Mum!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
After reading 'Hawk roosting' by Ted Hughes I wrote this from the perspective of a baby rabbit as the hawk's prey.
