Nothing But Defeat Poem by Gil Tee

Nothing But Defeat

Look at all the little sparrows
Learning how to fly
They’ll be airborne for a while
They’ll breed and then they’ll die
And we’re just like those sparrows
Except that we ask Why?
But we don’t like the answer much
It only makes us cry
We don’t like the truth too much
We don’t want to die.

Look at all the little children
Playing in the street
They’ll be happy for a while
They’ll run and they’ll compete
For the prizes life may offer them
That sometimes seem so sweet
But there’s never quite enough of them
Before that last retreat
For every winning streak must end
End up in defeat
You’ll find your hand’s a busted flush
When the deal’s complete
And the joke’s on every one of us
Betrayed by self-deceit
It’s a shame but in the end
There’s nothing but defeat.
