Ode To Darwen Tower Poem by Jeannette Heywood

Ode To Darwen Tower

Darwen Tower, there you sit resplendent on the moor.
Like many landmarks you represent times that came before.

Built to commemorate Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee.
Walks to view you closer fill grown-ups and children with glee.

Your moorland carpet rolled before you many do adore.
What fun and pleasure is evoked when folks deign to explore.

Mother Earth adorned your hills with heather, grass and gorse.
Senseless vandals who burn you should feel such shame and remorse.

In bygone times there was a risk of losing the moors forever.
All would be lost but for our ancestors' brave endeavour.

The moors belong now to the Town and what a joy they are.
Since your creation there is a panorama of land afar.

From where you stand as sentinel, our Town below you empower.
Long may you remain robust and strong, our beloved Darwen Tower.
