Oh If Only Poem by Eben S J

Oh If Only

Rating: 4.3

As I slide the knife in
His face seems to grimace
As blood froths at his mouth
And spills to the floor

I follow the lines
Twisting the knife
Ripping flesh
Carving him a new face

I spin his head round
I cut open the back of his head
And stick my hand deep inside
Scraping past the coarse inner side of him

I grip the warm interior
Of his head
Once I'm sure I've clung on tight
I rip it out

In a flurry he is left
Hollow and empty just as I feel
How I love this time of year
I think to myself

As i place the candle
In the now grinning
Pumpkin head which stares back
As the candle flickers away

I place him out
Into cold darkness
where I too have been left
Oh if only I was a pumpkin

There life although painful
Their pain is short lived
The pleasure they have
Compared to mine agonizing unbound time

Light comes for them
In the morning
And if they get lost
They have the light inside to guide them

Morning never seems to come for me
Someone has extinguished my light and me with it
I am left alone in the dark
Waiting for someone to take pity

As children all dressed up
Appear at my door asking for sweets
I wonder if they know how lucky they are
Oh if only I was a pumpkin
