On The Melbury Abbas Csw Falsely Claiming Motorists Are Speeding

Only in Britain would the police give power to

A group of civilians, allowing them to make false claims

Of speeding and yet not do anything to check that they

Do not abuse this power but simply

Let them continue to lie unabated.

What can you do in such a country when a group of NIMBYs

Are empowered to slander- and do it happily for their purpose?

But keep driving through their hamlet despite them

While they keep lying about your speed

Until the thing becomes ludicrous and absurd enough

That someone sees it for what it is and does something about it.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Written in protest following the actions of the Melbury Abbas Community Speed Watch group who made a false claim of speeding against the poets wife twice, as a means of dissuading motorists from driving through their hamlet, which has long been a bugbear of the residents of this village. Realising that the police will not check these people who are abusing their power, the poet decided to write about it.
