On The Stone Poem by William B. Petricko

On The Stone

O youth of ambition, please do let me tell
The wisdom you'll need in your life to do well.

Spend four years in college and get your degree
A masters will come if you add two or three.
Then keep on collecting, you really will be
Important and praised when you add PhD.

Go chasing diplomas and papers with pride
Eventually you'll get one that says that you died.

But one thing is sure, for those letters you own
Engravers make more with each stroke of the stone.
