On The Upside Poem by Trevor Toews

On The Upside

Rating: 4.5

The world upside-down! I like it this way better,
So glad I entered after its inverting.
Now there’s grace, and things aren’t to the letter
Now there’s comfort when I’m hurting.
Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth? That didn’t work.
It never offered remedy.
But giving enemies your coat and cloak and shirt,
Somehow this makes sense to me.
The journey up is down now, just accept it,
Don’t try to change it back to how it was
Seems like everybody would have kept it,
Had they the power of preference, void of love.
“How can the humble be exalted? ” They might ask,
“This is backwards and amiss! ”
But I am one intent upon the task
Of keeping it like this.
I praise the One who overturned and scattered
A world of careful, calculating men
I say, “I really like it this way better.”
To those who wish it right side up again.
