Only The Wisest Men Poem by Amanda Lukas

Only The Wisest Men

You know the difference between you and I?
I cannot compromise myself
to succumb to your random acts
of jealousy
and I refuse to take the blame
for your own insecurity.
I do not live my life
for you, I live it for myself,
for my mother and grandmother
and for those before them.
Ultimatums are unnecessary
and you will find them only to go unnoticed.

Every person seems to have a clear idea
of how the next person should lead their lives,
but none about one's self.

Do not attempt to change me
because I will not change.
Do not attempt to reason with me;
I refuse to listen to the advise
of a man who considers himself wise.

Only the wisest of men know
that they know nothing at all.
