Of all pet animals
Wondered why dad bought for
us a baby porcupine!
Instead of a cat
Those good old days
Seventy-four years ago
All excited, googled eyed
We would sit
Watching that unique rodent with soft hair
Patiently we would feed fruit leaves to it
Contented it looked cute
Surprised we found erectile spines on its
back, sides and tail
that lie flat
Seems porcupine spines detach
quickly when threathened!
We never dared to tease it.
