Parallel Lives Poem by Mary Daly

Parallel Lives

If I had not met you I wouldn't have married,
Instead, I wouldn't have tarried
Someplace where I really shouldn't have been.

I would have left you with your family support,
Our lives together wouldn't have been fraught
With silence, accusations and a nasty scene.

I would have followed my chosen career,
Unfettered by babies, (Still single, my dear?)
And excelled at it, happy to compete.

You would have found a loving spouse,
Who adored you so much, a wonderful house,
And lots of children to make you complete.

I hope, my dear, now we're separate.
That it really isn't far too late,
For you now to find The One.

Now I am single and you have a chance
To have a second, fulfilling romance,
Even though our own light has flickered and gone.
