Pinky Promises Poem by Dakota Ellerton

Pinky Promises

What promise,
could I make and keep?
What words do you want to hear...
If I told you, I were hanging from the edge,
my toes curling over the chair,
would you come rushing to the locked door?
It's as if only a night ago,
I called to hear your voice.
I could feel your worry.
Tears were rolling down your face.
Regardless of what you'd said,
I tied the black and white scarf around my neck.
I stood on the edge of the hill,
preparing to struggle.
I was saying goodbye when...
I slipped.
The noise I made,
did you hear it?
My life, was trying to escape my throat.
For a moment I dangled,
before I could get my footing back.
I wasn't ready.
to lose you.
Not like that.
I listened, and walked away.
Not knowing, I'd be back the next night.
