Poem Poem by Jay Alexander

Poem

The sea will gobble, gobble,
Slowly but surely.
It will chip-away
The face of every cliff, every rock,
Devour houses,
Then beasts and men,
Flip them into
Liquid jaws.

Does the sea will this?
It does not know,
It only knows it is destiny.
First it will infiltrate
Deltas and river valleys,
Swamp lands,
Extend its boundaries
Slowly and stealthily,
Until it submerges everything
Turning the earth,
Into a ball of water.

The sea will say:
My hour has come,
I will inherit the earth,
I will bury it.
Come closer,
The only sound you'll hear
Will be an eternal to and fro
Of crashing waves,
Tall and majestic as sky-scrapers.

Passing travellers
From another star
Are puzzled,
How could this be?
Once, signals were beamed
Now there's
Only water as far as the
Eye can see.

Will the travellers
Stop to investigate.
There is no time
The universe is too big,
They have other fish to fry.

The sea will be
The only custodian;
The sea alone will decide
When next to reveal its hand.
