Pretence Poem by Takunda S Chikomo

Pretence

Pretence

I was told that
Before a gal finally says
Yes to a guy
She first observes him
From afar.
So i put on
My best imitation of
A perfect gentleman.
I was told that women
Are quite emotional beings
So i told her that i
Felt something for her
Even though i knew
Perfectly well that
I was faking the feelings.
I was told that
By the time a girl reaches
The age of eighteen
She already has within her mind
Her perfect kind of wedding.
So i promised her marriage
Even though i knew i could not afford it.
I was told that women love children
So i told her that
I would be the father of her children
Even though
I knew to myself that
I find little children annoying.
I was told that women
Are moved more by what they
Hear and see
So i portrayed for myself
An image of perfection
So that when i finally decide
To approach her
Proclaiming to be her Prince charming
She would believe me there and then.
I guess what I'm trying to say is
She later on found out that
I'm not the man whom she thought
Me to be all along.
