Purpose Poem by zaheer uddin

Purpose

If man was made
to eat and mate
why the beasts and the birds
are more virile- -

Was man then made to satiate
the hunger of his flesh and soul
grab all the silver and that gold
and envy what the other holds- -
why must he leave it all behind
before the journey ends- -

Was then he made to stay in shape
working out and eating right
a perfect body in the case
and roses on the dead man's grave- -

Or was he made to
dance and play
and while the hours away- - -
Why passions fade and skin decays
Why must the flower die - -

Did God create this perfect being
With consciousness and will to choose
Without a purpose or a use- -

We don't create
No pin or wheel
Unless the end is well conceived- -
