Rhapsody On Memory Poem by Brian Sonberg

Rhapsody On Memory

Rating: 5.0

This night seems the same
and memories come
rushing like piano keys
tickled internally by some
phantom mouse.

The rain wouldn't let up
and our smiles stretched
as far as stars
or summer canvas.

We chased each other
like in children's games.
Confined to sheets we
found we were explorers
of uncharted skin.

Our bodies new,
awkward in the soft light,
we raced to
enclose our fears.
Self-consciousness
hidden in embrace.

Rain tapped out approval
in cadence,
set the tempo
for first breaths.

Bared lips
and closely pressed hips
stood at opposite ends
of the world;
Temporarily ignorant
of one another.

Yes, nights like this one
Stretch on forever
But memory still brings
Comfort, though you are
no longer here.
