Self Deprecation Poem by Mary Nagy

Self Deprecation

Why is it so easy for me
to see the ''good'' in everyone else
ANYONE else.......
but me?

It was brought to my attention
that I quite frequently
self deprecate.

My first response to this was
''Oh my gosh! I am so...stupid! ''
But, then I thought
about my kids.

What am I teaching them
when I put myself down
as I so often do?

Why can't I just accept a compliment?
Instead of saying ''Thank you''
I always try to convince the person
why they should reconsider.

I hear myself.
I tell myself to ''Just shut up! ''
But, I still manage to sound like a fool
listing my many flaws
(just in case they hadn't noticed them) .

I have to stop this.
I need to find a way
to accept praise
and love myself.

True wisdom here, Mary, but I'm in the self-deprecating camp.

Hey Mary, here's another one! ! ! Why does one always feel the underdog! ! It's a hard upwards struggle but you're in with a good start, so 'bash' on there and you'll come out all the better in the end. I agree with David, proud is the word, hard to hang on to but it's the answer. Great write as usual, you are always very expressive, and tell the tale well. Love Ernestine XXX

A small caveat, Mary. As you know I won't lie to you, you can believe me when I praise you. The way you are now will slowly mellow into more of what you eventually will appreciate about yourself. Going slow with the mellowing (or the growing up) however is the best option. It's an essential part. Best H
