She Asked A Question Poem by Linda Hepner

She Asked A Question

She asked a question I cannot repeat
Because I can't ask it myself.

"What if…? " she asked, catching my eye,
And then, "What then…" and glanced away
So rapidly it was as if
And era crashed
And smashed her childhood

While I stood helpless as an oak
Pretending to be eternal.
