Slum Rat/Street Dog Poem by Hikaru Etanaru

Slum Rat/Street Dog

Forsaken was I, the moment born
Bound to life by emptiness and scorn
Longing for a companion, comrade in arms
A life where death, betrayal was norm
.
With the silence of night, I awoke at dawn
With the coming of light all hope gone
They say light signifies justice and purity
To us the unfortunate, a new day is born.
.
Everyday's a struggle, a matter of time
For us there's no future only death n grime
Like rats we live n die in gutter
Our very existence considered a crime
.
We live in garbage with our bitter pride
Destined to be trampled by the dignified
The nail that stands out is Hammered down
If we group together it's genocide
.
Day in day out I bury my brothers
United by survival, born of different mothers
I await the finale with my grave that I dug
To meet in heaven my brothers and others
