Smoke Gets In Our Eyes Poem by Diana van den Berg

Smoke Gets In Our Eyes

Did you feel that winter wind’s wild embrace?
Did your colleague’s kind word
warm your inner ear?
Did that friend’s gentle smile
open a window of yesteryear?
Do your eyes sing the leaves waving at you?
Is your heart touched by the sky
blue and boundless over the ocean?
Do you breathe the tang of the sea?
Do you savour the sweet, sweet air of dawn?
Do you feel loved beyond reason
and cared for in every season?

I’m glad - for then
my smoke signals still reach you freely.
