So Far From Sliabh Luachra Poem by Francis Duggan

So Far From Sliabh Luachra

From the high narrow road that leads to Knocknagree
The Paps of East Kerry he will never more see
An aged man with a terminal illness just waiting to die
His bones they will rest neath the southern sky.

With his deceased Aussie wife he is destined to lay
Far from the old fields and old groves of his boyhood day
But yet not too old or weak to visualize
The song of the robin to welcome sun-rise.

The bigger World out there it was to be seen
And he left old Sliabh Luachra when he was nineteen
But now his days are all but numbered he has seen his last Spring
And he will never again hear the white breasted dipper sing

In the stream by the house where he lived as a boy
When the rain it poured down and the flood flowed bank high
And though the life from him it is fading away
Till his last breath the memories of home with him will stay.

From life's worries and cares he will soon find release
And in this Southern Land he will rest in peace
So far from Sliabh Luachra where he grew to a man
And the Countryside where his life's journey began.
