Start Something New Poem by Sarah Mkhonza

Start Something New

Who said that newness was new,
when life is repetition of one day
after another? Yet still life lays
a strong shifting log on my shoulder.
Start something new.

I still think about that past so long ago,
and walk head bent in thought about it.
Start something new where you will define
who you are and the path so untrodden
by the thoughts of yesterday.

I begin and look at space, the dream is
hiding in the air in front of me. For you,
your eyes are looking at the emptiness.
For me a thought lost along with others
emerges ans sits and says, this is it.

I see the faces that pour over the future.
They are looking for themselves in the picture.
The truth lays hidden in how we look.
You see your world. I see your darkness.
Somewhere between the two, we both
emerge working on what will find us
ourselves tomorrow.

Will you start something knew? Will
I stand here urging you to begin and
go where I haven't been. Where we
feel knowers of all things have been,
yes, something is waiting to begin.

This bubbling something that is in
our babbling, as we talk of it, see it,
and yet fail to handle it and give it to
time, is waiting and forming like a froth,
that floats on the river at the end of the
storm. This is the end of something,
this storm in our thoughts.

We will be glad we sat and shared.
When we mused about it it formed.
When we put our hands where our
thoughts wanted to go it stood out.
Then one day we will hand it over,
to the generations that think a tool
was invented before the thing was
made. The tool that defies time, came
before the making of what it was
made to do. False thinking says
use it the way it will give you the
result. You are the winner.
