Step Poem by Jeshua Logsdon

Step

Step
Step off the ledge and fall
Fall into a velvet oblivion
Tumble headfirst into a downy cloud of misfortune
Collapse onto the sheets of indignity
And cringe as they cocoon you
Enshroud your life with hatred
Engulf you
Surround you
Drown you in a sea of self-pity
You will fight the waves frantically
And gasp for air
But the air is stagnant
Infected by the stench of misery
Depression
And you will look around for a way out
Any sign of hope that could come floating along
A ship
A vessel
A piece of driftwood
But nothing…
And an inkling of doubt pollutes your thoughts
Before you even see the light of morning.
Convinced that rescue will never come
You sink
You sink
You sink into the weakness that consumed you
Sink into the darkness that made you pathetic

You said you could make it until morning
You said you had the will-power.

Where’s your will-power now?
