Sunrise. Poem by Carl Roussell

Sunrise.

Rating: 5.0

And the sun rises above the horizon,
lighting remains of a battle waged in the night
between adversaries who share the same nation;
caught in a civil war that has torn apart their homes.
Families split in two, with some on one side
the bitter enemies of others who must hide,
till the call of battle raises them to action
in defense of their dreams and aspirations.

Men lie in the mud unmoving,
half submerged in mud unmoving.
A man, my brother, lies unbreathing.
Never will I see him again.

They who survive the malevolence of the night
are further from the answer for the land,
and the children too young to fight today will learn
to hate above all else countrymen not the same
as them, and countrymen who haven't the heart
to kill on native soil not so distant relatives.
Our government speaks to both sides, powerless.
The bombings and killings continue to this day.

Men lie in the mud unmoving,
half submerged in mud unmoving.
A man, my brother, lies unbreathing.
Never will I see him again.

A poignant write that gives a vivid portrayal of civil war. The effect of civil war is so devastating for it divides brothers, families, friends, government and the governed. And the.most affected by it are the children who are the hope and builder of tomorrow. A great piece.

Thank you for the comment, and that the poem was able to move you. The closest I have been to civil unrest is the one and only time the War Measures Act was exercised in Canada during the October Crisis in Quebec (1970) . Thanks again and have a great day.

The genesis for this poem was early U2 music. Also I have worked with people from Europe and the Middle East and their tales of experiences with civil war is almost unimaginable to me. It makes me glad I live in the country I do.
