Survivor Poem by azmat naushad asif

Survivor

From the darkened earth's womb
The sunflower peeped into the light
In awe and wonder of the beautiful sky
It turned its head towards the sun
Cheerful and smiling bright

Unaware of the seasons change
The supreme sun was wrapped up
In clouds, the mighty rains lashed
on its piercing drops, the
Sunflower was washed clean
Delighted until she saw her reflection
The flower was deflowered of its colour

Scared she hung her head in shame
Clinging on to its colourlessness
But dignified she remained.

The time then took its toll
Ripping her apart, it plucked
On its petals, one by one
Bare but brave thus she stood

A weed then sprouted
At its root, entwining around
To suckle up at its shoot
She gave birth to a thorn
In her defense, enough
To scare the weed away

No more will she now bear
Enough of patience severe
A new weapon she had in her hand
Now she took off the flower cloak
One by one she dropped it off
Donning on the beautiful spines

Saguaro, by new name
She graced herself
Now come the sun, the wind, the rain
In harsh deserts she could survive
And smile and laugh and bloom and ripe
From Sunflower to Saguara
The metamorphosis was complete
She never felt beautiful as being this
