Swansong For Pets Poem by Roger Hudson

Swansong For Pets

Road and railway track
Sandwich
The small house

Crossed carefully
Gateways
To delights
Of field and stream and woodland

At scampering species
Randomly they strike
Those metal monsters

Ending short lives
Of pampered pets
Cats, dogs

Causing
Repeated pangs of loss
To myself, my young sister
Rapidly forgotten on arrival
Of each cuddly new puppy or kitten
Survival not guaranteed
