Tagore In Polyglot (11) : The Golden Boat

The golden boat

The clouds thunder in the sky above in the thick of the rainy season,
I am on the river bank with my morale at a low, waiting alone.
Heaps of my harvested paddy sheaves lie in stacks,
beside the river running full with its ferocious current and battering trait,
The rainy season has set in even as harvesting is still on.

It's a little farmland, with me, alone in it,
Water runoffs are playing in serpentine course, all around.
The village on other side as I see,
looks like a painting smeared asshade of a tree
under a gloomymorning overcast sky.

Who is approaching the bank sailing a boat while singing song all along?
To be someone I know, it appears.
Not casting even a stray glance,
Drifts away in full sail run,
Helpless water-waves break against the hull in their usual stance.

Oh dear, where are you sailing to?
To which alien land?
Kindly make a brief stop over at the bank,
Go wherever you like to,
Give away whomsoever you want to,
But take away only my golden harvest
with a momentary smile,
As much you want on board from the whole lot of mine
Till nothing more is left.

I waited at this river bank so long,
keeping what I remained overwhelmed with,
And all those I have laden on your boat in layer after layer.
Now, have compassion and take me aboard too.

The small boat is full with my golden paddy,
no more room is left for me,
Inthe sky of rainy season, dense clouds hoverall around,
I am left behind, alone, on the desolate bank,
The golden boat had sailed away with all I had.

সোনার তরী (Original poem in Bengali)

গগনে গরজে মেঘ, ঘন বরষা।
     কূলে একা বসে আছি, নাহি ভরসা।
            রাশি রাশি ভারা ভারা
            ধান কাটা হল সারা,
            ভরা নদী ক্ষুরধারা
                    খরপরশা।
     কাটিতে কাটিতে ধান এল বরষা।
     একখানি ছোটো খেত, আমি একেলা,
     চারি দিকে বাঁকা জল করিছে খেলা।
            পরপারে দেখি আঁকা
            তরুছায়ামসীমাখা
            গ্রামখানি মেঘে ঢাকা ও
                    প্রভাতবেলা-
     এ পারেতে ছোটো খেত, আমি একেলা।
     গান গেয়ে তরী বেয়ে কে আসে পারে,
     দেখে যেন মনে হয় চিনি উহারে।
            ভরা-পালে চলে যায়,
            কোনো দিকে নাহি চায়,
            ঢেউগুলি নিরুপায়
                    ভাঙে দু-ধারে-
     দেখে যেন মনে হয় চিনি উহারে।
ওগো, তুমি কোথা যাও কোন্‌ বিদেশে,
     বারেক ভিড়াও তরী কূলেতে এসে।
            যেয়ো যেথা যেতে চাও,
            যারে খুশি তারে দাও,
            শুধু তুমি নিয়ে যাও
                    ক্ষণিক হেসে
     আমার সোনার ধান কূলেতে এসে।
     যত চাও তত লও তরণী-'পরে।
     আর আছে? -আর নাই, দিয়েছি ভরে।
            এতকাল নদীকূলে
            যাহা লয়ে ছিনু ভুলে
            সকলি দিলাম তুলে
                    থরে বিথরে-
     এখন আমারে লহ করুণা করে।
     ঠাঁই নাই, ঠাঁই নাই-ছোটো সে তরী
     আমারি সোনার ধানে গিয়েছে ভরি।
            শ্রাবণগগন ঘিরে
            ঘন মেঘ ঘুরে ফিরে,
            শূন্য নদীর তীরে
                    রহিনু পড়ি-
     যাহা ছিল নিয়ে গেল সোনার তরী।

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I had ventured to translate this great poetic creation of Rabindranath Tagore in polyglotfew years back as I was pursuing doing so as ameteur work for some poems I love. But thistranslation did not see light of the day as I was apprehensive lest I hurt sentiments of a section of people for whom the poem is kept dearly too close to their hearts, even though Tagore's works crossed copyright boundary long back. In fact, when Tagore published it, hundreds started deciphering its subtle meaning forcing Tagore to explain his thought behind the poem.
Then recently I saw some English translations of itand I thought it fit to let others see my translation as well.Translation is only a means to carry ideas to people not knowing the laguage and it has to carry the meaning as close to the original one. Poetic translation is somewhat better than literary translation as the latter appears too dry. But then the translator has to take some liberty in crafting it.
Being amateur I know my limitation. But I found that in those translations one subtle attribute to flow of river finds no mention. One must appreciate the observing acuity of the poet to pick most appropriate words as attribute to the river having strong current and battering transverse waves. This two combined makes a river ferocious causing erosion of river banks. Oceans have only waves perpendicularly hitting the shore periodically making loss and gain of soil balanced.
He used the word খরপরশা [One who touches roughly (adj, f, as river is feminine in Bengali & Sanskrit)tantamount to battering like kicking, slapping, pulling etc.] खरं स्पृशति + स्त्रियाम् आप्। खरस्पर्शा । with আর্ষ প্রয়োগ, he wrote খরপরশা for obvious reason. River batters the banks while it moves along its course in longitudinal flow.
